    Cornelia always entertained us with her stories and her stern warning not to come visit.  Or, if we did come visit we were to stay at her place, play cards, and drink.  She had plenty of alcohol and her apartment was warm, and of course there was her jazz collection.  She also claimed to be a good cook.  Having never met her in person, we took her word for it. We always assumed that the rest was just fiction.  She was a wonderful story teller, and the things she told us were just that...stories.  The loaded shotgun I found in the bathroom closet one day suggested otherwise.  Cornelia did not like surprises, as it turned out. She wasn't too pleased when we showed up on her doorstep with a bouquet of flowers and a bottle of wine one Saturday morning after a somewhat harrowing all night journey.  We cheerfully shouted surprise, expecting her to throw open the door, welcoming us into her arms. Instead, she slammed the door rudely.  We glanced at each other and shrugged.  We giggled a little....we had chased down the horrible diner breakfast with the pint of vodka that was supposed to be a gift.  Then, the door opened again, and we saw perhaps a hint of a smile on her face as she muttered something under her breath and told us we were both "f---ing crazy" showing up here unannounced.  She made us promise not to wander off during our visit, to stay inside.  She made some incoherent comment about "having to bury us in the garden".  To this day I don't know what she was talking about. We all laughed (the first time we all laughed together, in the same room).  I suspect we were all laughing for different reasons.  From my perspective Cornelia's garden was a dry, rocky, garbage strewn spit of land that we had passed through on our way to her door.  "Garden" was a ridiculous term to apply to such a desolate place, nestled into a much larger desolate place.  The only things I could imagine growing there were broken glass and rusty nails.  Desolation and despair can be beautiful though, especially in black and white.  Cornelia's "garden" attracted me in a way I cannot describe.  Cornelia was herself beautiful in that same despairing way.  She had these amazing tattoos that started at her wrists and wound their way up her arms.  The tattoos were a continuous scene, with children playing on the beach, cars, various men (all of them much more attractive than myself), birds, and some abstract images I never understood.  One morning Cornelia let me see all of her tattoos when we were standing up on the roof, watching the sunrise.  Sorry Matt. I know we agreed that Cornelia was "off limits".  But, you should know by now that I can't be trusted.  Hell, for all I know you may have seen them too.  The most interesting, and beautiful thing about the tattoos was that they were all black and white.  There was no color anywhere.  Much of their beauty and their mystery stemmed from their stark contrast against her pure white skin.  Despite our promises, Matt and I did wander off, the first chance we could. I regret it now.  Thankfully, something in Cornelia's voice caused me to pull my father's old pistol from my suitcase and slip it into my jacket pocket as we left Cornelia's place that day. Otherwise.  Who knows?   The last time I saw Cornelia we (Matt and I) were sliding into the back seat of a taxi (really just some old Toyota Corolla driven by an old man with rotting teeth) .  We were going home.  Cornelia leaned over into the back seat and gave us each a motherly kiss on the top of the head and said, "keep some vodka in your cabinet. One of these days I'll drop in on you for a visit." Sadly, her visit never came.  Life became busy....we all drifted apart.  Many years later I went looking for Cornelia.  I still shake my head when I think of that day.  All I could say was "what happened here?".  I kept repeating that mantra until the taxi driver said with genuine sadness in his voice, "I don't know sir".  Then he was silent the rest of afternoon.  Cornelia's home was little more than a pile of rubble  But, I had to smile as I stepped forward and admired Cornelia's garden.  It looked exactly the same as it did so many years earlier.  I knelt down, and scooped up a handful of soil and took it home.  In some small way, Cornelia's garden lives on.  Here on the internet, of all places.  As I said earlier, desolation and despair can be beautiful.  Especially in black and white.
